David Howell is a teacher. Although formally trained as a music educator, it all began with piano lessons at age 7, clarinet a few years later, followed by bassoon and organ and studies at Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa State University where he majored in music education with the emphasis being on bassoon and piano, he has always been a teacher.
After college he found opportunity awaiting him as bassoonist within the United States Air Force Band Program. During this time, he performed in many states and eventually was relocated to the Air Force band located in Tokyo, Japan. While there he performed as bassoonist, pianist, and saxophonist, while touring all of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. While is the Tokyo area, he was also the choir director and organist at the Air Force Base. When he wasn’t busy touring, he also gave music lessons to children of American military personal who were living in the area.
After returning to the United States, he went into music retail and eventually into the field of aviation where he was a charter pilot as well as a certified flight instructor. This career was put on hold when he became a family man, and the increased desire to be near his family (rather than flying around the country side) became increasingly evident.
It has now been many years since David turned in his flying wings, but by doing so he has been a full time Dad while maintaining a piano studio along with his wife. He is or has been a church organist and has been in demand as an accompanist for semi-professional groups throughout the greater Des Moines area and is well known as an accompanist through connections with many of the schools in the area.
